چکیده

Human Activity Recognition has witnessed a significant progress in the last decade. Although a great deal of work in this field goes in recognizing normal human activities, few studies focused on identifying motion in sports. Recognizing human movements in different sports has high impact on understanding the different styles of humans in the play and on improving their performance. As deep learning models proved to have good results in many classification problems, this paper will utilize deep learning to classify cross-country skiing movements, known as gears, collected using a 3D accelerometer. It will also provide a comparison between different deep learning models such as convolutional and recurrent neural networks versus standard multilayer perceptron. Results show that deep learning is more effective and has the highest classification accuracy.

Automatic Classification of the Sub-Techniques (Gears) Used in Cross-Country Ski Skating Employing a Mobile Phone

The purpose of the current study was to develop and validate an automatic algorithm for classification of cross-country (XC) ski-skating gears (G) using Smartphone accelerometer data. Eleven XC skiers (seven men, four women) with regional-to-international levels of performance carried out roller skiing trials on a treadmill using fixed gears (G2left, G2right, G3, G4left, G4right) and a 950-m tr...

Automatic Classification of Sub-Techniques in Classical Cross-Country Skiing Using a Machine Learning Algorithm on Micro-Sensor Data

The automatic classification of sub-techniques in classical cross-country skiing provides unique possibilities for analyzing the biomechanical aspects of outdoor skiing. This is currently possible due to the miniaturization and flexibility of wearable inertial measurement units (IMUs) that allow researchers to bring the laboratory to the field. In this study, we aimed to optimize the accuracy o...

A simulation of cross-country skiing on varying terrain by using a mathematical power balance model

The current study simulated cross-country skiing on varying terrain by using a power balance model. By applying the hypothetical inductive deductive method, we compared the simulated position along the track with actual skiing on snow, and calculated the theoretical effect of friction and air drag on skiing performance. As input values in the model, air drag and friction were estimated from the...

Overuse injuries in cross-country skiing.

Cross-country skiing has always been one of the most popular winter sports in Scandinavia (Eriksson, 1976). Although downhill skiing has become more and more popular during the last ten years, cross-country skiing is still the most important mass sport in Finland. The number of competitive skiers has been increasing owing to the fact that the younger age groups as well as the veteran series hav...

A Comparison of Frontal Theta Activity During Shooting among Biathletes and Cross-Country Skiers before and after Vigorous Exercise

BACKGROUND Previous studies using electroencephalography (EEG) to monitor brain activity have linked higher frontal theta activity to more focused attention and superior performance in goal-directed precision tasks. In biathlon, shooting performance requires focused attention after high-intensity cross-country skiing. PURPOSE To compare biathletes (serving as experts) and cross-country skiers...
